VAT formula: net

Short intro: VAT formulas are few: add VAT, remove VAT, calculate the tax amount. The trick is using the right direction, a heroic challenge for spreadsheets everywhere.

Formula

From net amount to VAT-inclusive total

Starting from net, multiply by the VAT factor. At 22%, the factor is 1.22. At 10%, the factor is 1.10.

From VAT-inclusive total to net amount

Starting from gross, divide by the VAT factor. This is reverse VAT calculation: you do not subtract the percentage from gross.

Rounding rules in practice

Round to cents and keep line totals consistent with invoice totals. Many-line invoices can differ by a few cents depending on whether VAT is calculated per line or on the total.
