VAT 22% calculator: add or remove VAT
Short intro: A 22% VAT rate is the standard rate in Italy. This page shows how to add it to a net amount or remove it from a gross amount, without turning a tiny invoice into a spreadsheet swamp.
When to use 22% VAT
Use 22% as the standard Italian VAT rate for many goods and services. Check first whether the item falls under reduced rates such as 10%, 5% or 4%.
Formula
VAT = Net amount × 22 / 100Gross amount = Net amount × 1.22Net amount = Gross amount / 1.22
Calculate gross price from net price
If you start from the net amount, multiply by 1.22. A net amount of €250.00 becomes €305.00: €250.00 base plus €55.00 VAT.
Remove 22% VAT from gross price
If you start from a VAT-inclusive total, divide by 1.22. A gross amount of €610.00 contains €500.00 net and €110.00 VAT.
Practical numerical examples
- Net €100.00 → VAT €22.00 → gross €122.00.
- Net €250.00 → VAT €55.00 → gross €305.00.
- Gross €610.00 → net €500.00 → VAT €110.00.
